BREAKWALL TRIBUTE

I have been fishing my whole life. Some of my earliest memories consist of waking at dawn to hike along Eastern Sierra creeks pitching size 2 Panther Martins amongst overgrown brush to trout with my dad. Or sitting in the back of his old Chevy Blazer with an inflatable raft airing out after a day of catching bonito and sand bass in King Harbor.
Once my family moved to Orange County my dad and I spent nearly every weekend fishing Lake Mission Viejo for largemouth bass and trout. After a deadly case of golden algae we were forced to abandon a formerly great fishery and start putting time in the local harbors and bays.
It wasn't until high school that I truly fell in love with fishing for Calico Bass. There is something so exciting about bobbing around in a 12 foot aluminum row boat powered by an electric trolling motor chucking plastics at pissed off bass in the rocks. Needless to say fishing breakwalls and boiler rocks became one of my favorite types of fishing.
There have been countless hours spent fishing a few small spots, developing patterns, making custom baits, and keeping logs only to learn more each outing. There are some days I leave the boat ramp wanting to sell all of my gear, other days I geek out about for weeks on end. The whole thing is so therapeutic. The rhythmic flow of the swell, the sound of the water surging in and out of the wall, the head shakes and unforgettable pull of a good fish. So simple and seemingly lack luster compared to fishing the islands, but man I love it.
Enjoy some visuals collected over the years.
